To qualify for Medicare, individuals must meet certain criteria. Most individuals become eligible for Medicare when they turn 65 years old. However, those with certain disabilities or end-stage renal disease may also qualify before reaching the age of 65.
Medicare is primarily available for U.S. citizens or legal residents who have lived in the country for at least five consecutive years. Receiving or being eligible for Social Security benefits automatically enrolls individuals in Medicare Part A. To enroll in Part B and other parts, individuals need to apply during specific enrollment periods.
